Spirit of Woodstock Title Graphic
woodstock NEW ESOPUS INDIANS

In this rare 1949 or 1950 snapshot, Zena children capture the spirit of the "Calico Indian Rent-Wars", in which white tenant-farmers masquerading as Native Americans to disguise their identities, expressed grievances and generally committed mayhem against the Van Renssalaers, who, in the mid-1800's, apparently owned almost the entire State of New York.

Several Woodstock kids, left to right, Danny Rosen, Billy Beasley, E.J. Gold, act out "Esopus Indians" of the Catskills as best they know how -- having no idea what they may have looked like, other than what they were familiar with -- the "Plains Indians" they'd seen in 1940's Westerns!

This was taken at the Fairgrounds at the Village Green in Woodstock. The ragged and gaptoothed WWII vintage feathered bonnet was considered spectacular in its day.
