Spirit of Woodstock Title Graphic
woodstock SUMMER DAY ZENA MILL

Caught on camera by Arthur Gold, a group of artists, dealers and opera singers from The City, bathing in the Zena Pond in summer of 1953.

Left to right; Philip Pavia, Lee Krasner, Billy Beasley, E.J. Gold, Philip Guston, inner tube, unidentified guest, Martha Jackson far right and, off-camera to extreme right, opera singer Eleanor Steber.

Many heat-exhausted city dwellers came up to Woodstock, even those lucky enough to live out in the Hamptons and Fire Island were not exempt from the lure of this famous century-old artists' colony, and Philip Guston and Isamu Noguchi had residences there during the mid-1950's, just down the road from the Zena Mill, a favorite painting spot and cooling-down place for local artists.
